The Athi Water Services Board of Kenya with financial and technical assistance from the French government successfully rehabilitated Sasumua Dam. The rehabilitation programme which covered Sasumua Dam and its water treatment plant that serves the capital city Nairobi, at a cost of 62 million euros, repaired the damaged spillway that was damaged in 2003 during the El Nino rains.

Athi Water Services Board in collaboration with the African Development Bank (AfDB) is planning to implement Nairobi Sewerage Improvement Project (NaSIP) within Nairobi. The overall rationale of the project is to allow for the protection of ground and surface waters from pollution through increase in sewerage coverage, connectivity and improved efficiency of the sewage treatment plants.

His Excellency President Mwai Kibaki on Thursday, 12th March, 2009 launched the Kazi Kwa Vijana Programme to facilitate the creation of opportunities to enable Kenyan youth to be gainfully employed and to earn a decent livelihood. This was also to act as an emergency initiative to improve the impact of the current famine crisis in the country so that the youth will gain income to purchase food during this season when over 10 million Kenyans are facing hunger.
»200 More Water Tanks to Boost Rain Water Harvesting Campaign

AWSB has embarked on a massive rainwater harvesting campaign in Nairobi, Thika, Kiambu, Limuru and Gatundu. The rainwater harvesting campaign is targeting institutions and individuals who own premises that can be used to effectively harvest water to supplement what is received in the household/institution. Towards this campaign, AWSB has distributed 900 tanks and also helped in the guttering process. Other institutions to be recipient of the remaining tanks are being evaluated and the successful ones will receive the tanks.

Tue 4 May 10 Athi Water Services Board launched the first ever automated borehole in Kenya. The Rurii Water project was commissioned by the Director General of the Confederation of Danish Industry, Mr. Hans Skov Christensen and The MP for Juja Constituency, Hon. George Thuo on the 23rd of November, 2009.
